Things we'd do if we were David Gallop

Rugby league fans: if you're anything like us (hopefully not, for your sake) you will have spent a substantial portion of your waking hours thinking about the little tweaks and big changes you would make to the NRL if you were lucky enough to be in charge.

We certainly have. Which is why in recent years you have been able to find us trying to perfect the ideal NRL season draw on a scrap of paper in lectures, drawing up a 20-year blueprint for NRL expansion in meetings, using football analogies in job interviews, and constantly trawling the interwebs for the latest and greatest in rugby league ideas. Now, here, this accumulation of reflection, blue-sky optimism and procrastination has found a home.

This page is where footyfootyfooty gets down to business. No Ricky Stuart jokes. No Beau Ryan references. No whinging about Khoder Nasser.  Sometimes footy is a serious business, and here we'll be casting a serious eye over some of the major longer term issues in the game.

Think of it as the footyfootyfooty strategic plan: a repository for blog posts, stand-alone musings, information, interviews and analysis on topics ranging from rules and regulations of the game and its administration, to the long-term expansion of the game in Australia and elsewhere.

  1. Reinstate my teams points.
    Give back the trophies.
Let my mates spend whatever they like.

  2. Place a bronze statue of a bare-chested Daniel Fitzhenry outside every stadium.

  3. If I were David Gallop i would...
Split the comp into 2 divisions. I would expand to 20 teams with 10 in each division. Each team plays each other twice for home and away fixtures (like it should be) with 2 byes.

Top 8 teams of Div 1 play finals, bottom 2 teams drop to Div 2 for the next season. Same with Div 2 where top 8 teams playing finals and the top 2 (either Grand Finalists or Minor Premiership 1 & 2) advance to Div 1 with bottom 2 teams of Div 2 dropping to either QLD or NSW Cup. If a team wants to join the competition then they have to progress through the state comps.

Just like regulation in the soccer grades in Europe. Creating 2 fairly even divisions through progression by ability.

Get rid of the salary cap because once gone water will find its own level, eg Thurston might want $1m but then needs to find a club to pay him that, if he doesnt then he drops his price until it becomes affordable for a club to pay what he would accept and what they can afford.

You might not get Dragons playing Cowboys anymore (or for as long as it takes for either team to move up or down in divisions) but the quality of each game would be better where Dragons play Storm and Cowboys play Sharks more often. You might even see Newtown return to play Broncos or Wentworthville playing Storm for a Grand Final.
